Bugsy Malone at The Belgrade

Gang rivalries come to a head between Dandy Dan (Rayhaan Kufuor-Gray) and Fat Sam (Charlie Burns) who reaches out to the eponymous Bugsy Malone (Amar Blackman) for support. It’s a straightforward enough story; told for almost 50 years since Alan Parker directed his musical comedy film in 1976, but holds its entertainment value as the best of gangster films do.

Directed by Sean Holmes, the first UK tour of Bugsy Malone could be described as a touch long, but is easily redeemed by Paul Williams’ excellently jazzy score.

The setting starts off industrial with a metal staircase platform taking centre stage, but Jon Bausor’s dynamic set soon comes to life with props swooping in from the ceiling and Grand Slam Speakeasy bar gliding in to add a touch of glamour to the stage. Philip Gladwell’s lighting and sound by Ben Harrison plays a large part in making the set engaging, especially during the thrilling car chase scene.Camera flashes mark each massacre before the cast jumps up, rejuvenated for the next scene, and great use is made of the spotlight.

There is much to be said for this talented crew of youngers, holding their own among the adult ensemble, especially Amar Blackman as Bugsy commanding the crew in musical number “Down and Out”. The other musical number to really stand out is “So You Wanna Be A Boxer” which boasts Drew McOnie’s most captivating choreography.

Taziva-Faye Katsande is great as Tallulah, setting the tone for the whole production with her sassy opening and bringing some fabulous vocals throughout the show. Avive Wiliams matches that vocal skill with clear notes ringing through the theatre as the more uptight Blousey Brown.
Charlie Burns is delightful as Fat Sam, dominating the stage with his gangster bravado and oversized suit. His comic timing is spot on, especially in a particularly droll moment where he’s forced to clear the stage for the next scene.

There’s a joyful innocence and escapism in a show which rewards wrongdoing with lollipops and punishes bad guys with cream pies. Combined with the casts charm and enthusiasm it’s well worth a watch.
Bugsy Malone is performing at the Belgrade, Coventry until 18th September. Purchase tickets here: https://www.belgrade.co.uk/events/bugsy-malone/.
