Roll up, roll up… the circus has arrived in Leicester, bringing with it a dazzling display of visual spectacle. The investment in set design, props, and pyrotechnics is evident, creating a vibrant and engaging atmosphere.
The show’s narrative framework is loose, presenting the vibrant acts as if they are television content beamed into the black-and-white home of mime artist and magician Christian Lee. A simple adjustment, such as placing the ringmaster’s recruitment call at the beginning to give the mime a clearer purpose, would have sufficed to tie the plot together. As it is, it’s best not to think too deeply about the story; simply sit back and enjoy the variety of performances.
The performers exhibit admirable athletic skill and acrobatic ability, though their efforts rarely appear effortless. The smiles glued on their faces are unwavering, occasionally betraying a hint of trepidation during particularly risky moves. The show features an impressive array of acts, including juggling, crossbow stunts, fire twirling, and aerial acrobatics. Moments of genuine amazement do occur, primarily through the Mime’s playful antics and magic tricks which receive the most enthusiastic audience response – although sitting in the front row comes with its own risks.
The costume department deserves special mention for sourcing such an abundance of sequins and creating costumes that are switched in the literal blink of an eye in a well choreographed La La Land number. Vocally, the cast is solid, cheerfully navigating through a soundtrack featuring hits from musicals including The Greatest Showman and Moulin Rouge. The ensemble’s energy is infectious as they bounce around the stage.
Ultimately, while it may lack a cohesive story, the show offers an enjoyable experience perfect for a light-hearted family outing.
