The 39 steps at The Curve

“The 39 Steps” at the Curve delivers slapstick comedy at its finest. Tom Byrne leads the cast as Richard Hannay, a man on the run after being wrongfully accused of murder. He is joined by Safeena Ladha, who shines as the romantic lead in a variety of roles, from the melodramatic German Annabella to the prim Englishwoman Pamela. Ladha’s versatility is a delight, adding depth and charm to each of her characters.

The production showcases the cast’s remarkable versatility through rapid-fire character switches. Eugene McCoy and Maddie Rice, billed as Clown 1 & 2, take on a staggering array of roles, including police officers, spies, hoteliers, and even a thornbush, sometimes even within the same scene. Their caricatured acting and exaggerated performances are a highlight, adding to the show’s satirical and parodic style. The constant shift between these absurd and daft accents and character traits is a comedic treat, keeping the audience laughing throughout.

The play is a multimedia experience, pushing the boundaries of traditional theatre. One standout moment is the use of shadow puppetry to creatively depict a great escape, adding a whimsical touch. The extensive miming and inventive use of props are seamlessly integrated, enhancing the visual comedy. The lighting and sound design, meticulously crafted by Ian Scott and Mic Pool respectively, cleverly evoke the stop-motion movies of the 1930s with flickering lights and other period-inspired effects.

This slick production pays homage to Alfred Hitchcock’s original work, while simultaneously spoofing classic spy thriller tropes. The absurdity is heightened with clever gags, such as a recurring joke where a faux wind blows every time an external door opens, sending characters into comical disarray.

“The 39 Steps” is a tour de force of comic theatre, with a talented cast bringing over 130 characters to life in a hilarious whirlwind of energy and creativity. The show’s combination of slapstick humour, satirical edge, and homage to Hitchcock makes it a must-see. Whether you’re a fan of the original story or just in the mood for a good laugh, this production is an unmissable theatrical experience.
