Calamity Jane at The Curve

Calamity Jane, the classic musical comedy based on the Doris Day film, returns in a spirited new production at The Curve. Directed by Nikolai Foster and co-directed/choreographed by Nick Winston, it’s a show that doesn’t break new ground but offers a charming afternoon of theatre.

Carrie Hope Fletcher takes on the role of Calamity with confidence and vocal strength, handling the character’s brashness and bravado with ease. She’s well paired with Vinny Coyle as Wild Bill Hickok, whose stage presence and enthusiasm help drive the show’s central romantic arc. Their enemies-to-lovers dynamic is entertaining, and their duet “I Can Do Without You” brings some genuine energy to the stage.

The plot, revolving around Calamity’s botched attempt to bring a famous Chicago actress to Deadwood and accidentally returning with her maid instead, remains light and amusing. Seren Sandham-Davies makes a solid impression as Katie Brown, managing the shift from meek to confident well, while Molly-Grace Cutler lends a suitably aloof edge to Adelaide Adams.

One of the most distinctive elements of this production is its use of actor-musicians. The swing cast doubles as the band, blending ensemble scenes with live musical performance. It’s an effective choice that adds texture and immediacy to the show. Their ability to hop and skip while flawlessly playing wind and string instruments is astounding.

Matthew Wright’s design leans into simplicity, using a sepia-toned palette to create a layered, saloon-style aesthetic. It’s understated but places us firmly in the dusty, rough-edged world of the American frontier.

This enjoyable revival leans on nostalgia and strong performances rather than innovation but provides a perfectly pleasant afternoon at the theatre.
Calamity Jane is at The Curve, Leicester until 12th July 2025
