The Railway Children at The Little Theatre

Most people are aware of Edith Nesbit’s century old novel, but perhaps not so many know it’s also a musical, adapted by Julian Woolford, and now performed by Leicester Drama Society at The Little Theatre.

As in the classic book, siblings Roberta, Peter and Phyllis move from London with their mother to a north country village when their father mysteriously disappears. They start a new life with plenty of adventures, centred around the railway community near the cottage, The Three Chimneys.

Directed by Leigh White, this production is full of heart with a talented cast. Amanda Sadler is lovely in the gently maternal role of Mother, Ava Colford is charming as Phyllis, declaring everyone darling, and David Lovell is particularly endearing as the Old Gentleman who takes a shine to the three children. Scarlett Hubbard stands out as Roberta (or Bobby), with an RP vibrato to rival Julie Andrews. Perks, the Station Master, played by Tom Young, is an audience favourite with his cheery manner, bold voice, and clean enunciation of lyrics when the songs got rapidly wordy.

The music itself, composed by Richard John, is largely full of gentle melodies allowing the cast voices to shine.

You know a cast is well-directed and engaging when parts of the set are moved around and it’s not instantly noticed. Speaking of the set, designed by Gem Greaves, it’s cleverly designed to optimise use of the compact stage with surprisingly few trains in sight.

The classic book and film have a fond spot in many hearts, and this incredibly sweet musical production certainly does that nostalgia justice.

The Railway Children is performing at The Little Theatre, Leicester until 15th April 2023. Find tickets here, https://www.thelittletheatre.co.uk/whats-on/the-railway-children/
